Some of these melodies have been cherished across generations, while others are associated with hymns that are less well known. This wide range of melodies has influenced various composers, giving rise to new works and arrangements.\nAmong them, “Mantegna”—which also serves as the album’s title—is a melody written for a hymn depicting Christ’s agony in the Garden of Gethsemane, derived from a painting by Andrea Mantegna. Francis Jackson’s orchestral variations *Homage to Vaughan Williams*, based on this melody, form the centerpiece of this album. Also included are the new work *Carillon*, commissioned for this album from organist David Briggs, as well as arrangements by Percy Whitlock and others.
