Veteran French Arranger/Flutist Christophe Dal Sasso Performs Coltrane's Only Big Band RepertoireVeteran French arranger/flutist named "Group of the year" at the 2020 Victoires du Jazz, Christophe dal Sasso and his big band perform a studio recording of John Coltrane's "Africa/Brass" repertoire, first performed on stage at the Jazz a La Villette festival in Paris. Christophe dal Sasso is one of the finest arrangers in France. After producing four critically acclaimed discs, he has participated in many of the orchestral works of the Belmondo brothers. He also orchestrated the music performed by the Ensemble Intercontemporain on the album "Exploration" (2006) with saxophonist David Liebman, although in 1961 John Coltrane recorded his first disc for the Impulse label, Africa / Brass, which he signed to the label.This disc is the only one he recorded with a big band and is quite unique in his rich discography. Coltrane led an orchestra composed primarily of brass instruments in a series of songs arranged by Eric Dolphy, with material that included blues, folklore, spirituals, and songs related to slavery. These songs referenced their African roots and, moreover, reflected the entire African-American experience. Almost half a century later, Christophe dal Sasso, recognized as one of the most talented arrangers in France, returned to this emblematic repertoire. At the head of a big band augmented by drums, he faithfully recreates the spirit of love for humanity that John Coltrane inscribed at the heart of his music.
