Hindemith's Clarinet Concerto was written in 1947 at the request of Benny Goodman, and premiered by Goodman in 1950 (with the Philadelphia Orchestra, conducted by Ormandy), it is a playful work with Hindemith's unique harmonies and neo-classical form. Van der Roost's concerto was commissioned by Van Oosterhase, a close friend of the composer. This performance was not only the first performance in Japan, but also the world premiere recording. It is a technical and delicate work that demands the utmost expressiveness from the clarinet. Composed by Richard Strauss at the age of 15, \"Romance\" is a beautiful work in a traditional style. It was so important to him as a student that it was originally given the title Op.27 (this work catalog was later destroyed).
