He was raised in a poor family, but little is known about his life and no portraits exist. By the age of 20, he was performing as a bass de violon player in Paris. He then went to Italy, where he taught François Couperin's two daughters and wrote many works while studying Italian musical styles. This album contains some of Monteclair's early surviving published works. We can enjoy French music of the early 18th century, including three works from the \"Solemn Arias and Drinking Songs\" series and a concerto using the flute, which is said to have increased its role as a solo instrument around 1720. The performance is by the ensemble \"Les Odinieres,\" which specializes in works from the French Baroque period. The mellow sound is very attractive. Also playing traverso is Leila Breithaupt, a talented soloist who was also the soloist in \"Colorful Telemann\" (8.573900\/domestic release NYCX-10154) conducted by Kuiken.
