Description:

Born into a Jewish family in Warsaw, Weinberg (1919-1996) first studied at the Warsaw Conservatory, but was forced to flee to the Soviet Union in 1939 due to Nazi Germany's invasion of Poland. From Minsk, he settled in Tashkent and finally in Moscow, where he converted to the Russian Orthodox Church shortly before his death. His cello sonatas (the second was composed for Rostropovich) use the cello to its expressive limits and are often compared to Shostakovich's works, combining melancholy, lyricism, and intensity. The unaccompanied sonatas No. 1 and No. 3 are also dedicated to Rostropovich. While No. 1 is a relatively compact work, No. 3 is large in both scale and intensity, and is certainly comparable to the works of J.S. Bach. Naxos Japan
