Elim Chan is the first full-length album by a young Hong Kong-born conductor, Elim Chan, who was born in Hong Kong and studied conducting in the U.S. In 2014, she became the first woman to win the Donatella Frick Conducting Competition and has been the principal conductor of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra since 2019. Although she has accompanied concertos and performed live at competitions in the past, she chose dance music as the theme for her first full-length album. In the eight pieces selected from Prokofiev's "Romeo and Juliet" suite and the second suite from Ravel's "Daphnis et Chloe," she sings in detail while refraining from grandiose expressions, and the music is deep, with tight rhythms and flexibility. In ALL THESE LIGHTED THINGS, subtitled "Three Dances for Orchestra" by the American composer O'Gonek, the composer has a deep understanding of the character of the music and skillfully depicts the rhythmic interplay between the various percussions and strings and winds, resulting in a very attractive performance. This is an album that reveals a new talent for creating highly creative and flexible music that is neither heavy nor sharply angular in its expression, as one would expect from a master. Naxos Japan
