Schreck, who studied harpsichord at the Schola Cantorum Basel, has previously released three works on the OEHMS label: \"Byrd: Keyboard Works\" (OC1724), \"Time Remains\" (OC1864) and \"From Byrd to Byrd\" (OC1702). This album, commemorating the 400th anniversary of Byrd's death, includes works by Byrd, his teacher Tallis, and Gibbons, Byrd's junior, who made a major contribution to English Baroque keyboard music. These works are called \"virginal music,\" but in England until the mid-17th century, \"virginal\" was a generic term for string-repellent keyboard instruments, practically synonymous with the harpsichord. The harpsichord performance on this disc uses an instrument made in Italy, which had a great influence on England.
