The oboe was one of the first instruments to join the string ensemble as an instrument of the court orchestra during the Baroque period, and has continued to color the history of the modern orchestra from its earliest days. The history of its development is surprisingly little known, and it is rare to hear a solo performance of the instrument, especially before the introduction of the Böhm key system in the mid-19th century. Here, we are approaching this uncharted territory by Christopher Palameta, a Canadian old instrumentalist who has been active internationally as a member of the Tafelmusik and Arion Baroque Orchestras, and who has made recordings on the ATMA label using an 18th-century oboe. The oboe used in the performance is an original instrument made in Paris in 1835, a rare model that conveys the appearance of the oboe just before the invention of the modern structure. The piano played by Olivia Shum is also an 1840 original made by the London branch of the Paris Hérault Company, and is also a model that predates the adoption of the large metal frame of the modern style. The two carefully selected works spelled out for oboe at the time when Chopin and Berlioz were in Paris. Through the beautiful sound that evokes the warmth of the material, the original tone of the oboe of the 19th century, as envisioned by the early Romantic composers, is brought back to life in the present day.The piano is also a must-hear, with its unique sound and tone of the instrument of the time, reminding us of the appeal of a music that is not all about superb technique.
