Between 1920 and 1943, the orchestra gave 51 world premieres and 215 Zurich premieres, including works by contemporary Swiss composers, and discovered new musical talent that would spread its fame beyond Switzerland to the world. In 1943, however, Scheichelt, a Jewish immigrant, stepped down as music director, and the Zurich Chamber Orchestra was disbanded (the orchestra of the same name, which is still active today, was founded in 1945 by Edmond de Staats, and there is no direct connection between the two organizations.
