He had been composing since childhood, and in 1910, when he was a young man, he conducted the successful premiere of the impressive \"Te Deum\" under his own baton, and aspired to become a \"composer who also conducts\" like Mahler. However, his activities as a conductor became too busy, and he stopped composing. It was not until 1935, when he resigned from his post as music director of the Berlin Philharmonic and other public positions, that he was able to devote himself to composition. His creative fervor was renewed, and in the two decades following his death, two violin sonatas, a piano quintet, a piano concerto, and three monumental symphonies were produced. The Largo, a work published in 1903, was the source of the idea, albeit written as a young composer. However, Furtwängler himself passed away without performing this piece, and it was eventually recorded by Alfred Walther in 1989 and publicly performed by the same conductor for the world premiere two years later.
