Description:

Conductor Paul Schmitz was born in Hamburg in 1898 and died in Munich in 1992. He studied composition with Tch and Furtwängler, and began his career at the opera house in Weimar-Stuttgart, where he was assistant to Walter when he was music director of the Gewandhaus, and established close ties with the opera house and the Radio Symphony Orchestra there. Despite this significant presence, he is not well known in Japan, perhaps due to the fact that there are very few recordings of his music in Japan. He has conducted the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in a Mozart concerto accompanied by Foldes. The "Bru 0" recorded here may sound like an obligation of a broadcast orchestra, but Schmitz, who was a major player in Leipzig, was familiar with Bruckner, and the performance is a steady progression despite the technicality of Bruckner's works. The sound and tone of the heavy North German Radio sound of the time is also full of charm, as if it were a different kind of refinement from that of the post-Vant era.
