He met Elgar himself while a student at Westminster School, where the composer showed him a complete score of his own work. He then went on to Oxford University, where he studied music at the Leipzig Conservatory (where he studied composition with Reger), and made his professional debut in 1914 as a member of the music staff of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden; in 1918 he gave a trial performance of Holst's Planets, and the following year premiered the entire work, except for Venus and Neptune, which he In 1920, he performed Elgar's Symphony No. 2, which he admired.
