Description:
Shani DiLuca's fascinating Schubert Dances are performed by the talented pianist Shani DiLuca, who also participates in La Folle Journée au Japon every year. Born and raised in Monaco to Sri Lankan parents, she was discovered and educated by Queen Grace of Monaco, and has grown up to become one of the leading young pianists of the next generation. The new release on the MIRARE label features a selection of Schubert's piano dances. Schubert composed more than 600 piano dances, including works for two and four hands. All of them were intended to be danced to, and many of them were practical pieces that originated in the Schubertiade, where his friends gathered. Schubert wrote his dances at a time when aristocratic dancing was giving way to a more popular and middle-class style, and this is the background against which many of his works were created. Each piece is short, but the improvisational nature of the pieces, with their constantly changing tempos and tonalities, makes for a joyful selection that is like collecting "pieces of a star" one by one. The last piece on the album is Schubert's last piano sonata, No. 21, and Shani DiLuca's performance gives us a sense of the grandeur of Schubert's sublime and serene world of his later years, which seems to spread endlessly.
