Description:
This is a previously unreleased live recording of veteran reed player Eddie Daniels and Roger Caraway, a renowned pianist of his generation, at the Village Vanguard in 1988. Both are not flashy and have tended to be underrated, but their playing history shows that they are, above all, true musicians. This CD release is a masterful performance of the two, paired with an ironclad rhythm section that includes Buster Williams and Al Foster. In 1988, Callaway had won a Grammy in the Best Instrumental Arrangement category for Eddie Daniels' "Memos from Paradise" (GRP), and the members were in the midst of a period of great growth, but the appeal of this CD is that each of the five songs on it has its own distinct personality. The charm of the album is that each of the five songs has a different personality. The work opens slowly with a slow swing piece by Callaway, followed by a beautiful romantic ballad with the sound of clarinet woodwind, and then the third piece is an interplay of samba rhythms, while also using baroque phrasing.On the other hand, the last track was a "super" superb performance ・・・・! The clarinet and piano were in unison on the fast phrases, and the rhythm push from Williams to Al Foster made for a brilliant performance, The recording was done by George Clavin, the founder of Resonance, who has also recorded for Bill Evans and Thad Mel. Each of the four members is a craftsman, and their respect for each other is impressive!
