Description:

Manfred Honeck & Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra Beethoven's "Destiny" & No. 7 Music Director Manfred Honeck leads the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in a remarkable album from the excellent Reference Recordings, "Pittsburgh Live! . The fourth in the series features Beethoven's Symphonies Nos. 5 and 7. Both are SACD recordings from a live concert at Pittsburgh's Heinz Hall in December 2014, again recorded by the venerable Sound Miller team. Conductor Honeck has a reputation for thrilling music that is even more like Carlos Kleiber than the genius Carlos Kleiber, and he is very popular, especially in Europe and the United States. The "Beethovenfest," the centerpiece of the duo's 2014/15 season, featured the two symphonies here as well as the Eroica and the Ninth, but considering the nature of the works and Horneck's orientation, the two works on this album are truly the best of the bunch. The two works on this album are the very best of the program. Here, too, we can hear a performance full of expressive enthusiasm, making bold use of agogik, dunamik, tempo rubato, and achlerando to breathe a completely new life into the music. The Fifth vividly depicts the path from the intense and heavy beginning to the joyous and triumphant finale. In the dramatic and dynamic No. 7, the range of ups and downs is, as one would expect, extraordinary, and the piece rushes into the finale in a single bound. The music critic Kenshi Kaneko described the previous Bruckner "Romantic" as "not at the level of a 'fun-filled performance with a stick,' but a level of perfection that only a music director can achieve by making sure everyone knows it in rehearsals. This work, which again shows the duo at their best, is filled with everything they have been pursuing, and is an exciting and highly satisfying experience that will allow you to enjoy the depth and interest of the art of performance.
