Diego Urcola, who has played in the group of Cuban master Paquito for many years, invited Paquito to play in his own band, featuring 15 pieces by Mulligan, Monk, Dizzy to Ornette, Shorter Piazzolla, Kenny Wheeler, and fellow countryman Guillermo, etc. Born in Buenos Aires, 1965, Diego Urcola is a trumpeter who has been active in the New York jazz scene since the 1990s. He is a member of the groups of Guillermo Klein, Enrico Pieranunzi, and Israeli bassist Avishai Cohen, and was nominated for a Grammy Award for "Soundances" released in 2003. This work features Paquito Delivera, an artist who has become an important part of his performing career alongside these activities. Paquito is a master artist born in Cuba. Urquilla is almost 20 years younger than Paquito. However, he has been playing with Paquito for nearly 30 years and is a regular member of Paquito's group.Diego invited Paquito to perform on stage at the Punta del Jazz Festival in Uruguay when he performed a concept tribute to the Gerry Mulligan Quartet with Chet Baker. Taking the Mulligan Quartet as a model, the idea of a piano-less quartet piece came about, and with the support of engineer Luis Buck, who had long been supporting a project led by Diego and featuring Paquito, the project began in earnest. Diego is from Buenos Aires and Paquito is from Cuba. The selection of songs and the performances are very broad. Guillermo Klein, a genius who, like Diego, hails from Argentina, combined motifs of complex rhythmic patterns with an undercurrent of Latin American melancholy, symbolizing an unusual opening that hybridized various elements and featured everything from Mulligan, Monk, and Dizzy to Ornette and Shorter. The program features Mulligan, Monk, Dizzy, Ornette, and Shorter. There is also a Libertango by tango revolutionary Piazzolla, as well as music by Kenny Wheeler, whom Urcola respects.The rhythm section consists of Eric Doop, a regular drummer in Paquito's group, and Hamish Smith, an up-and-coming drummer from New Zealand. Both were born in Spanish-speaking countries and performed 15 pieces ranging from tango, rumba, and clave variations to jazz and contemporary music. This is a remarkable work that combines superb technique with a wide variety of musicality.
