Description:

Edward Simon is one of the most important contemporary jazz pianists in the U.S. His new album features his own quartet 'Afinidad' as well as the five-piece wind ensemble 'ImaniWinds' and a variety of guests including Gretchen Parlato (vo) and Adam Rogers (g). The new album features his quartet 'Afinidad' and various guests such as 'ImaniWinds', Gretchen Parlato (vo), Adam Rogers (g), and many others. 'Afinidad' is a quartet featuring Simon, David Binney (as), Scott Corey (b), and Brian Braid (ds), and the same members (+ guests) have also released on Red Records and CrissCross. This album is the first release from the quartet. This album is a rearrangement of the order of the two suites, "Sorrows and Triumphs" and "House of Numbers," which Simon wrote on commission for the Chamber Music Society of America's "New Jazz Works Program. "Sorrows and Triumphs" is a suite of three titles, "Equanimity," "Rebirth," and "Triumphs," inspired by Simon's more than 20 years of Buddhist studies. It features Gretchen, Rogers, and Rogerio Boccato (perc)." House of Numbers" is a suite consisting of "Uninvited Thoughts," "Triangle," "Chant," and "Venezuela Unida," featuring 'Imani Winds.Simon, who formed 'Afinidad' in 2000 and has known Vinny in particular for 25 years, says he always composes with the sound and sensibility of these members in mind. The steadfast quartet's A-Un interplay and meticulously arranged wind ensembles blend together beautifully. Simon skillfully uses not only acoustic instruments but also keyboards to create a wide range of sounds. Gretchen's vocals and Rogers' guitar are featured on several tracks, adding even more color to the album. The solos are also of a high level and are very rewarding to listen to. The influence of Steve Reich's minimal music can be heard throughout the album. On "Venezuela Unida," which is dedicated to Simon's hometown, Luis Quintero (perc) uses a set of three drums called culo'e puya, which is related to Venezuelan music. Venezuela has undergone socioeconomic and political changes over the past decade that have left its citizens in a state of crisis and turmoil. This song contains a wish for recovery to my fellow Venezuelans. The music is contemporary, grandiose, and dramatic, and the last song, "Rebirth"... will make you cry. This is a masterpiece that shows Simon's talent not only as a pianist, but also as a composer/arranger without regret.
