However, Schaller, who is a brilliant and dedicated musician, did not settle for ordinary performances of the Brahms symphonies. Brahms's symphonies are usually performed in a stately manner, but the second symphony was composed during a summer vacation on the shores of Lake Werther in southern Austria, and is full of pastoral and bright colors. Therefore, the small 53-member Philharmonie Festspiele was a perfect fit. It is said that Brahms preferred a small orchestra where the strings do not exceed the woodwinds, and here the orchestra attempts to reproduce his intentions without using period instruments or their techniques. The sound is not familiar, but it is very refreshing and fresh. The acoustics of Bad Kissingen's historic Max Littmann Hall are also noteworthy.
