Born in Worms in 1839, Gernsheim studied under a pupil of Spohr, earned praise from Moscheles and Bruch, and held an important position in German musical and academic circles. While he composed chamber music and numerous concertos, his central achievement was his four symphonies, the first of which was completed several years before Brahms’s First Symphony. Gernsheim maintained a close friendship with Brahms throughout his life, and the two held each other’s music in high regard. His compositional style also bears strong traces of Brahms’s influence and a shared aesthetic; one can hear this musical resonance in the Violin Sonata included alongside this work.
