Composer Ge Gangliu (Ge Ganliu) was born in Shanghai in 1954. After the Cultural Revolution, he studied violin at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and in 1983 went to Columbia University. In 1983, he studied at Columbia University, where he became a disciple of Zhou Wenzhong. His music, which he describes as "all music is composed of four elements: pitch, rhythm, timbre, and dynamics, and Eastern and Western music are completely different in these four respects," effectively employs Chinese-style pentatonic scales in places, while moving away from tonality. This album includes the world premiere recording of "12 Exercises for Extended Piano Technique. This work was born out of an in-depth dialogue with pianist Yimin Chang, and each piece uses a different internal piano technique. For example, the first piece uses the overtones of the piano's internal metal strings, while the second piece uses only the piano's lowest note, the A string, to create a percussion-like effect. The third piece uses pizzicato to pluck the strings, and the fourth piece uses one hand to hold the strings and one hand to play the keyboard, creating a mysterious tone. Other techniques include placing paper between the strings, rubber or magnets, and rubbing the strings with rubber mallets, creating a diverse and unique sound.
