Although much is unknown about his life, it appears that he studied under Johann Heinrich Buttstedt, a master organist and a pupil and successor of Pachelbel. He then studied in Merseburg, Saxony, under Johann Friedrich Alberti, who was then organist of the cathedral. After Alberti retired, Kaufmann succeeded him as court musician and organist of the cathedral in Merseburg, a position he held until his death. It is believed that Kaufmann wrote many works in the course of his duties, but very few are extant, and the religious works recorded here are all that are known. All of them incorporate the popular styles and compositional techniques of the time, and show that he knew how to use vocal and instrumental music appropriately and to full effect. Many of the cantatas, such as the recitative accompagnato and the arias with obbligato instruments, skillfully combine vocal and instrumental music, and the trumpet and timpani are used to great effect in scenes of grandeur.
