Louis Lortie’s new recording marks his first attempt at conducting while playing on his beloved Fazioli piano\nLouis Lortie was born in Montreal in 1959. He won the 1984 Busoni Competition. He has released more than 30 recordings on the Chandos label. He currently divides his time between Germany and Canada, pursuing his musical career. For his first recording in nine years—and his first as both pianist and conductor—he takes on Mendelssohn’s concerto and Symphony No. 5, marking the 200th anniversary of Mendelssohn’s birth this year. While Mendelssohn is best known for his famous Violin Concerto, he was also a master pianist and composed four piano concertos, including unfinished works. All of these pieces are characterized by the beautiful melodies so characteristic of Mendelssohn. Included here are the First Concerto, with its captivatingly sweet and elegant music, and the melancholic Second Concerto. The bright, brilliant yet soft tone characteristic of the Italian Fazioli—a prized instrument cherished by Louis Lortie—further accentuates the elegance of these works. Also included is Symphony No. 5, “Reformation,” a work that marked a turning point in Mendelssohn’s own career. This performance showcases meticulous ensemble work and a sense of grandeur.
