It was written in the style of Mozart and Haydn, but he himself felt that his talent had been exhausted, and he banned the performance of the piece. In fact, however, it is a wonderful work of consummate skill. No. 31, written 11 years earlier, is a charmer with its precise counterpoint and elaborately associated motifs. It is a fascinating piece that Wagner and Mendelssohn endorsed.
