Born in Italy to a family of millers, he was self-taught in music, and for various reasons was appointed musician to Louis XIV, where he remained for almost 26 years, exerting a strong influence on the French musical scene. A talented dancer, he contributed to the development of the French \"opera-ballet,\" especially in its use of fast-paced dances, and his passacaglia from \"Armide,\" written in 1686, was so popular that D'Anglebert and others arranged it for the occasion. In his early works, Telemann also wrote in the Lully-derived French style, most notably in the Suite in E minor. Rameau, a composer of Lully's generation, is known for developing the lyric tragedy (tragedy lyrique) introduced by Lully. This \"Dardanus\" was not well received at the time of its premiere, but gained popularity after its revision. It became one of Rameau's masterpieces. Bartolt Kuijken provides an overview of the development of French music from the 17th to the 18th century through the works of the three artists.
