After Mozart’s death, when Beethoven arrived in Vienna, Richnowsky stepped forward as his patron, housing the clearly country-bumpkin Beethoven in his own home and arranging for him to receive instruction from Haydn. Since it was written during that period, Haydn’s influence is evident throughout; yet, above all, it is an endearing work that also conveys a spirit of defiance and great pride. Symphony No. 2 was written in 1802 and is also dedicated to Lichnowsky. It exudes an optimistic brightness that is hard to believe came from a period when he was beginning to suffer from hearing problems.
