His early career was very similar to that of Franz Lehar, and he became as popular as Lehar, Kalman, and Oscar Strauss after devoting himself to composition in earnest in Vienna from 1906. His fame spread to the United States for a time, but his style was too much in tune with the times, and his popularity declined after his death. This operetta, one of his most successful, tells the story of Gil, the hero who falls in love with a master poet and is unable to break his feelings for his as yet unseen teacher, even though he himself is engaged. In the end, his fiancée is the \"master of poetry\" and the two fall in love anew. The title \"The Rose of Istanbul\" is a pen name given to Gil by his teacher. It is a story without any other story, but the melody is superb.Note that English lyrics are used in this performance.
