The first movement, marked “Allegro con brio, ma energico e appassionato,” is highly energetic; in contrast, the Adagio exudes an idyllic and sentimental atmosphere; and a lighthearted scherzo movement that at times evokes American music, culminating in a grand final movement—a set of variations based on a Bach chorale, complete with an introduction and coda—making it a major work with a playing time of about 50 minutes. The “Hungarian Pastoral,” an orchestral arrangement of a piano piece, is rich in folk elements, yet its sophisticated orchestration demonstrates the composer’s skill. You may find yourself comparing it to Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances.
