Although he did not make much use of wind instruments in chamber music, many of his works have been arranged for flute trios because the flute was as popular as the violin among amateur musicians at that time. In his later years in London, Haydn himself composed flute trios for his patrons who loved the instrument, and four of them are widely known as the \"London Trio\". Here, leading French-speaking composers have recorded Haydn's flute trios in their entirety, including 18th century arrangements, on three CDs.The arrangements from countless trios with baritone parts (a type of viola da gamba with many resonant strings) played by the composer's master, Marquis Nikolaus of Esterházy, three piano trios with the violin part played by a flute, and a series of divertimentos that were available in London before the composer himself traveled to the U.K., all offer the full appeal of Haydn's unique use of sound. The collection also includes three piano trios with the violin part played on the flute, and a series of divertimentos that had been circulating in London before the composer's arrival in Japan. The instruments used have been chosen based on the date of composition and the style of the music. In particular, the flute is played in two different models, one with only one key and the other with eight keys, so that the listener can enjoy the unique flavor of this period of transition for wind instruments.
