The Tchaikovsky Cycle by the Tonhalle Orchestra was planned with great enthusiasm for the 2019\/20 season to commemorate the appointment of Paavo Järvi as the new Tchaikovsky Music Director of the Pavo \u0026amp; Tonhalle Orchestra. Although the schedule had to be rescheduled due to the global pandemic of the new Corona virus, the enthusiasm of the artists and all involved delayed its completion by about a year, and the recordings made with it are now being released as the first complete set of Tchaikovsky symphonies by a Swiss orchestra. In addition to the previously released No. 5, Nos. 2 and 4, and No. 6, which will be released simultaneously with the complete works, the CD will also include No. 1 and No. 3, which were performed live without audience in January 2021, as well as selected orchestral works. The vibrancy of the Russian folk-like phrases in the first appearance of No. 1 is also wonderful. The tight ensemble, the vivid expression of each player, and the dense orchestral swell enhance the romanticism of the works, while at the same time evoking a sense of elegance, and the image of Tchaikovsky that only Paavo Järvi could have carved.
