In 2009, that electrifying concert returns! This commemorative album was released in anticipation of that concert. This performance of “Pathetique” follows the highly acclaimed Tchaikovsky “Symphony No. 5” with the same orchestra, and Kobayashi remarked that through this performance, “I understood ‘Pathetique’ for the first time.” Progressing at a generally leisurely and expansive tempo, the Arnhem Philharmonic’s warm, unpretentious sound enriches the sorrow-laden melodies of the “Pathétique.” Guided by Kobayashi’s baton—in which the orchestra places absolute trust—the orchestra reveals a dramatic expressiveness bordering on the spectacular as the second half progresses. This is an outstanding performance, characterized by a solid sense of structure and Tchaikovsky’s signature dramatic romanticism evident throughout.
