Whether this was the result of the band pouring every idea they’d accumulated into the album or a sign of uncertainty about their direction remains unclear, but the eclectic sound exudes the ambition typical of a debut album. The opening track, “Serenade for the Sun,” which creates a stark contrast between radio-friendly, catchy vocal parts and technical instrumental sections that sound as if ELP were aiming to be Return to Forever, is the quintessential eclectic track that symbolizes this album.
