His real name was Gerald Hugh Tyrwhitt-Wilson, the 14th Baronet of the prestigious Berners family. He studied at Eton College and worked as a diplomat before succeeding to the title. This \"The Nymph of the Waters\" is from 1946. Choreographer Frederick Ashton portrayed Sirene, who plays with the upper classes on a French beach, and Sir Berners added atmospheric music. Sir Berners himself devised the scenario for \"Cupid and Psyche,\" a political satire that was not well received by the Sadler's Wells Theatre audience. The music, however, is charming and enjoyable enough to listen to without the stage. This recording succeeds in reviving two forgotten works.
