The third installment is the large-scale Symphony No. 4, which takes about an hour to perform. Louis Glass was a Danish composer active in the same period as Nielsen, but his creative sources were Franck and Bruckner, who had influenced him during his studies in Brussels. This symphony, conceived in 1905 and completed in 1908, has the strongest wind section of his symphonies, with six horns in three winds, and is written with a stricter structure than his previous three symphonies, which means it does not have the pastoral atmosphere that had been characteristic of his earlier works. The symphony was premiered in Copenhagen in 1911, where it immediately attracted attention and was performed several times, in St. Petersburg, Oslo, Stockholm, Warsaw in 1930, and three more times after the composer's death in 1936. Unfortunately, the symphony was never performed publicly again, but it cemented his position as the most important Danish symphonic composer of his time.
