Since their first album (AU97706), which included Schumann’s Symphony No. 2, was so well-received, anticipation for this new release is high.
The centerpiece is “The Rite of Spring,” arranged by the composer himself. While stars ranging from Argerich to Barenboim have all recorded it, it remains a piece of the highest difficulty, both technically and musically. In particular, its intricate rhythms demand acrobatic ensemble skills, yet Takahashi & Lehmann’s perfect synchronization is nothing short of astonishing. Although the piece uses the piano like a percussion instrument, they never simply “hit” the keys—instead, they allow the sound to resonate fully.
Nankarrow’s “Sonatine” is a piano solo piece arranged for four hands by Mihashov. As an early work, it was technically written to be played by humans, yet it is a curious piece featuring rhythms that seem to defy human motor skills. Audibly, it has a Bartók-like quality and can be said to belong to the Stravinsky tradition.
Arnulf Hermann is a German composer born in 1968. He is a friend of the Takahashi and Lehmann couple, and the title of this work suggests that four-hand piano pieces were once in high demand for home use. It consists of three short pieces, with the third being a peculiar arrangement for four hands—a piano arrangement created prior to the composition of the piece itself.
Rei Takahashi and Björn Lehmann both studied under Klaus Helwig at the Berlin University of the Arts. As of 2015, Lehmann serves as a professor at the university, and he and Takahashi have become familiar figures in Japan, often conducting master classes together. With their deep understanding of musical scores, exquisite ensemble playing, and brilliant technique, they represent the emergence of a new star in the world of piano duos.
King International

Tracklisting:

1.Concerto per due pianoforti-soli~1.
