Many of the artists who fill the disc on this release are among those who introduced bop to the world, and this special edition is a true testament to the vitality and foresight of Savoy's artist roster. When bop began in the 1940s, big band swing was still the mainstream. The young performers who nurtured this new music were a relatively small group within the jazz community, and as a result, the newcomers often grouped together under each other's names. In addition, the number of companies challenging bop was sparse, at least initially, partly because many of the major labels had not anticipated this. Thus, a handful of small labels with an interest in bop served as beacons for those who created it. And we have to thank Teddy Reig, who was very active in the early days of bop record production. A born hustler and avid music fan, Reig befriended many of the jazz artists he admired and befriended. He went in and out of clubs, scouting out up-and-coming young performers, including Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, and recognizing their talent. When he decided to enter the record business, his first record (1945) featured these bop pioneers; Reig hired blues bass singer LaVerlegs Williams to be part of a band led by Clyde Hart. It was also the first time Gillespie and Parker played in the studio together.SAVOY JAZZ, synonymous with excellent jazz and R\u0026amp;B since the 1940s, is Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, John Coltrane, and Erroll Garner, Cannonball Adderley, Dexter Gordon, Fats Navarro, and many other legendary artists. The label also offers a selection of more recent recordings by Pat Martino, Phil Woods, Etta Jones, Bill Frisell, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, Larry Coryell, Andy Bey, Ravi Coltrane, and Milton Nascimento.
