The work opens with a depiction of the gloomy oppression felt by many at the time, and gradually begins to embody the spirit of courage of those fighting for justice, moving toward the Russian Revolution, which Shostakovich's own father and uncle had experienced. The LSO members performed this tense work with a high sense of urgency, as if they were trying to match Noseda's spirit.
