Although the storm of revolution that swept through Vienna in 1848 dealt a severe blow to the morale of the entire nation, private dance bands continued to perform “to make ends meet”; as a result, Johann Strauss also contributed several new waltzes, playing a part in lifting spirits. The waltzes written under those circumstances may indeed seem a bit lackluster, but this is Strauss we’re talking about. There’s no doubt that every one of them was of a high standard.
