The opera \"The Forest\" is one of Smythe's masterpieces, a tragedy about young lovers who are played by a woman rumored to be a witch in a mysterious forest inhabited by spirits. Smythe himself wrote the libretto in German, and it is filled with a chorus of spirits, unbridled passion, unwavering loyalty, and a love that transcends death. It was first performed at the Berlin Court Opera in 1902 and in London the following year.In 1903, she performed a very successful opera at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, which was the first time in the history of the opera house that a woman composer had performed a work.
