Two years after Andrea Marcon founded the Venice Baroque Orchestra in 1997 and created a sensation with his recording with Carmignola, La Chetra was founded two years later in Basel, Switzerland, a world-class center of ancient music practice, combining instrumental and vocal music. For the project marking the 25th anniversary of their formation, they chose Bach's Mass in B minor, which Marcon says \"the more I understand, the more mystery appears\" since he first bought the score when he was 15 years old. In this recording, he paid particular attention to presenting the work as a three-dimensional sound image, including the effects of the soloist and lipieno. While the chorus consists of 30 soloists, the instrumentation consists of 16 strings (5\/4\/3\/2\/2), Bach's designated wind instruments, two theorbo and two organs for bass (the organ is played by the same player, and Marcon concentrates on conducting). The tempo setting is characteristic in many places, including a heavy take on the alla breve, but is full of conviction, and the contrast between the double chorus and the curious interplay between the parts are the result of the strong relationship of trust between the conductor and the performers. The program includes many noted conductors with strong presence, such as Lackner on trumpet, Walther on traverso, and Buccarella on organ, as well as notable names in both Japan and Europe, such as bass Akinobu Ohno, soprano Kaho Inoue, and violin Sonoko Asabuki, who will also sing solo. In addition to the conductor's own interpretative commentary, there are extensive liner notes (in English, French, and German) with articles by conductor and musicologist John Butt, who has recorded the work himself with the Dunedin Consort, and Gilles Cantagrel, director of the Leipzig Bach Society. This is an unmissable new recording that will reexamine the reality of Bach's last great work and musical legacy.
