He studied composition at the Latvian Conservatory with Jáceps Vitols and conducting with Jánis Medinš. He then studied piano in Paris with Kassados and Gieseking before returning to Latvia to work for a broadcasting company. After the war, he became a professor of chamber music classes at the Latvian State Conservatory of Music.\n\n\n\nHis works are little known even in his native Latvia, but he is in fact a remarkably prolific writer, having left behind six symphonies, as well as numerous operas, ballets, chamber music, cantatas, and arrangements of folk songs. Among them, about 100 piano pieces have been identified, many of them small. In this album, pianist Nora Rousset performs a variety of small pieces using Chepitis' manuscript scores, and we can hear beautiful pieces with the atmosphere of Scriabin and Rachmaninoff, but also with a hint of Latvian folk music.\n\n(Naxos Japan)\n\n\n\nContents\n\nYannis Chepaitis(1908-1989): 1-5.\n\n1-5. 5 Preludes\n\n1. prelude in D flat major(1937)\n\nPrelude in F minor (1949)\n\nPrelude in F minor (1953) 4.\n\nPrelude in C-sharp minor (1951)\n\nPrelude in C major (1975)\n\n\n\n6-8. three Caprices\n\nCaprice in A flat major (1939)\n\nCaprice No.1 in E flat major (1949)\n\nCaprice No.2 in C major(1954)\n\n\n\n9-10. two lullabies\n\nLullaby in A flat major (1943)\n\n10. lullaby in F major(1953)\n\n\n\n11-17. seven pieces\n\n11.
