He studied organ at the Munich University of Music and won the second prize in the organ section of the Munich International Music Competition in 1971.He later served as chorus master at St. Lorenz Cathedral in Kempten and was professor of organ and church music at the Munich University of Music, as well as teaching at the Würzburg University of Music from 1984 to 2003. He is also a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts and serves on the board of the Leipzig New Bach Society.
