Elgar, who had long been fascinated by the poem, completed it as a magnificent oratorio between 1899 and 1900, the year after their marriage. It begins with a scene in which \"Gerontius, the dying hero, is terrified of death, and under the guidance of a priest, his soul leaves this world. In another world, angels and demons play games, and Gerontius almost falls at one point, but an angel gives him a blessing that purifies his soul and sends him on his way to God.This is the most mystical and poetic of Elgar's works and has been highly acclaimed in the U.K. since its premiere, but it has not been well received in Japan, perhaps because of its strong religious tone. One of the reasons why \"Gerontius' Dream\" became familiar to Japanese fans was a recording made by Elgar's close friend, Boult, with the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 1975. This recording was praised by the Penguin Guide as \"a dedicated performance\" and by the Gramophone Guide as \"Boult expresses universal humanity,\" and it has been reissued many times on CD to the delight of all music lovers. Prior to this, this 1968 video was recorded at Canterbury Cathedral with Janet Baker, Peter Pears, and John Shirley-Kirk.Since this was the first BBC music program in the UK to be shot in color, eight of the nine \"color-capable cameras\" available in the UK at the time were used for the filming. The director of the video was Brian Large, who was just shy of 30 years old. The historic moment was captured in great detail. Bonus footage is a documentary film produced to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Adrian Boult's birth. Vernon Handley, who also served as his assistant, follows the life of Boult, including a memoir by Andrew Neal, president of the Elgar Society.
