The songs are in the New Orleans piano tradition of blues, jazz, boogie-woogie, and jive. Malcolm John Rebennack Jr. aka Dr. John, is a pianist and singer from New Orleans, born in 1941 to a father who owned a record store, and was exposed to a variety of music from an early age. In the mid-1960s, he moved to Los Angeles and began his career as a studio musician. After joining the Wrecking Crew, he made his solo debut in 1968 with \"Gris-Gris\" on Atco, followed by his masterpiece \"Gumbo\" in 1972 and his biggest hit \"Right Place Wrong Time\" the following year, which reached #9 in the US.In 1989, \"Makin' Whoopee\" earned him a Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Performance, and he won a total of six Grammys during his lifetime.
