After the war, however, his honor was restored, and he made a name for himself as a composer, including a friendship with Shostakovich, and by the time of his death in 1996, he had left behind numerous works, including about 20 symphonies and 7 operas. These works were considered \"subgenre of Shostakovich\" and forgotten for a time, but with the recent reevaluation and performance of various pieces, his unique compositional style and unexpected lyricism have been reevaluated, and in the 21st century, he has gained new popularity as \"one of the leading Russian composers of the 20th century\" (see below).
