He was a pioneer in composing music that incorporated polytonal music, polyrhythms, and a variety of textures. The Los Angeles Philharmonic and its music director, Gustavo Dudamel, have recorded Ives' four symphonies for Deutsche Grammophon in a groundbreaking two-CD set. Ives was a richly conceived composer who wanted to create something unique. His ultimate goal was to open the door to the uniqueness and individuality of music born in America. Ives' symphony is a gift to the world. I am delighted that we have recorded this masterpiece for Deutsche Grammophon,\" commented Dudamel. Ives was one of the first American composers to gain international recognition, but he was largely unknown during his lifetime. The first Los Angeles Philharmonic performance of his First Symphony, conducted by Zubin Mehta on November 11, 1971, still exemplifies the late Romantic musical works of Europe.Symphony No. 2 \"borrows\" from Ives' famous taste for hymns, marches, and folk songs, as well as from his own early organ music. The Second Symphony is a transitional work between the purely European tradition of the First Symphony and the purely American Third Symphony. And No. 3 is the pivotal work, which the composer himself referred to as \"a mixture of the old and the new ways of doing things. More than 10 years after the completion of No. 3, the composer returned to the symphonic genre with a work that maximizes the philosophical, metaphysical, and musical maturity of his ideas. This is No. 4.
