It began with the Fourth Symphony, recorded in 1960 in connection with the Mahler Festival held in New York for the centenary of the composer's birth, and continued alongside the New York Philharmonic's subscription series until 1967: the Third (1961), the Fifth and the Second \"Resurrection\" (1963), the Seventh \"Song of the Night\" and the Ninth (1965), the First \"Titan\" (1966) and the Sixth \"Tragic\" (1967). The Eighth was recorded during a guest engagement with the London Symphony Orchestra in 1966. After Bernstein stepped down from the New York Philharmonic in 1969, the Kindertotenlieder (1974, with the Israel Philharmonic) and the Adagio from the Tenth (1975) were added. It is in this first cycle above all that Bernstein's burning sense of mission as an apostle of Mahler's music is felt.\nThe set is full of outstanding performances that throw each work's character into relief: the Third, recorded immediately after the death of Bernstein's mentor Mitropoulos, and the Fourth, graced by the charming singing of Reri Grist, among them. The three-dimensional \"360 Sound\" of which the Columbia label was then so proud still sounds strikingly fresh.\nEach disc comes in a cardboard sleeve reproducing the original American first-issue LP artwork. The Second and Third are spread across two discs each, with the first movement on disc one and the remaining movements on disc two. A 32-page booklet includes notes by Klaus Geitel together with track listings, original LP numbers and matrix numbers. The 2009 DSD remastering by Andreas Meier is used throughout.\nSony Music\u003c\/p\u003e","brand":"Sony Classical","offers":[{"title":"Default Title","offer_id":53595615068449,"sku":"886979433328","price":41.0,"currency_code":"CAD","in_stock":true}],"thumbnail_url":"\/\/cdn.shopify.com\/s\/files\/1\/0568\/8482\/2076\/files\/886979433328.jpg?v=1790481935","url":"https:\/\/cdsvinyljapan.com\/en-ca\/products\/886979433328","provider":"CDs Vinyl Japan Store","version":"1.0","type":"link"}
