A generation after Verdi, Cagnoni had a long and successful career as an opera composer, beginning in 1847 with \"Don Bucefalo\" (available on CDS 634). King Real\" was composed and completed around 1888 on a libretto by Antonio Ghislantzoni, the librettist of \"Aida,\" but with Cagnoni's death in 1896, only the vocal score was published and the opera was never premiered.
