The Crowning of PoppeaThere are two manuscripts of Monteverdi's "The Crowning of Poppea," one in the Library of St. Mark's Basilica in Venezea and the other in the Library of the Conservatory of San Pietro a Maiella in Naples, and Jacobs studied both with great care before recording the work. The Neapolitan manuscript is heavily incorporated in several parts. Emperor Nerone is having an affair with Poppea, wife of Ottone, a Roman knight chancellor. Otteravia, the wife of Emperor Nerone, laments this fact and orders Ottone to assassinate Poppea, but is unsuccessful. In the end, Nerone and Poppea are united, and Poppea's coronation is held at the royal court amidst the blessings of the god of love. The vivid contrast between the symphonic opening and the lively, rhythmic second half is brilliant. The precise tempo setting and the subtle and inventive choice and use of instrumental tones are superb.In no case are the lyrics ever clouded, and the rhythm of the words and the speed of the narration come alive. The performance is brilliant, full of vivid color and imagery. As always, Dominique Vis's theatrical skill is overwhelming. The final choral scene, in which the singers and instrumentalists sing that love will ultimately prevail, is a masterpiece with its high, joyful tone. King International
