Swedish trombonist Christian Lindberg Christian Lindberg has been increasingly noticed as a \"composer\" in recent years, and says he is eager to compose music commissioned by orchestras and players in many countries. His new album, recorded in 2018 with the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra under his direction, features three orchestral works composed within the last 10 years. The Waves of Wollongong was commissioned by the Rotterdam Philharmonic as a piece to be performed with the New Trombone Collective, a group of young Dutch players formed in 2001. The inspiration for the composition came from the waves that the young players saw in Wollongong, a city on the southeastern coast of Australia, coming in from Hawke's Bay, New Zealand, across the Tasman Sea. The music is created by transforming the appearance of those waves, large and small, into the nine trombones of the New Trombone Collective. Lindbergi dedicated the music, which ends with \"Fireworks of Celebration,\" to von Bahr, CEO of BIS Records.Lullaby of Liverpool\" was commissioned by conductor John Lubbock as a \"double concerto\" for percussionist Evelyn Glennie, who received the title of Dame, and Lindberg's own trombone. The composition is based on the song \"Embryo,\" which Christian's mother, a big Beatles fan, sang to him as a lullaby when he was six years old. It was premiered by Glennie and Lindberg at the Cheltenham Festival, one of the prestigious music festivals, with the Orchestra of St. John's Smith Square in Lubbock. In 2013, Hjert Rihm and Hans Verbugt of the Flanders Philharmonic (now the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra) approached Glennie about an orchestral work of similar scale modeled on Stravinsky's \"The Rite of Spring,\" but various circumstances delayed its composition until now. The composition of this piece had been delayed for a number of reasons. The impetus for the composition, he says, was the November 2016 presidential election in the United States. The world was suddenly turned upside down ...... from November 8, 2016, to January 1, 2017, and I was so shocked that I became psychologically paralyzed.\"The idea came to me on the first day of \"2017\" and I spent a year to complete the work. The 33-minute piece consists of seven songs: \"The World Upside Down,\" \"Lonely Creatures,\" \"Fake News,\" \"Inner Soul,\" \"The Bragger,\" \"Reflection,\" and \"Train from Hell. Train from Hell\". It was dedicated to Rachel Maddow (Maddow), a journalist who anchors a TV show on MSNBC, USA.
