The disc includes Etudenfest (for strings and piano with obbligato), Shadow Music (for small orchestra), Short Stories (five interludes for string orchestra), Adagio molto et mesto (composed by Beethoven and arranged by Brett Dean from String Quartet No. 7 in F major \"Razumovsky No. 1\", Op. 59-1), and Testament (for orchestra). Dean is also known as a virtuoso viola player and was a member of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra for 14 years, but in recent years he has been focusing on composition.The works on this disc are indeed by string players, and the string parts incorporate effective techniques. The disc also includes an orchestral arrangement of the third movement of Beethoven's \"Rasumovsky No. 1,\" with an exquisite contrast between solo and tutti. On the BIS label, he has released albums of his own compositions, including the Rural Symphony (BIS 1576), the Violin Concerto \"TheLost Art of Letter Writing\" with Frank-Peter Zimmermann as soloist (BIS SA 2016), and his own viola concerto (BIS 1696).
